MIT SOFA Faculty Dashboard - Redesign

Web Application

About

In this assignment we were give the task of creating a Dashboard in which we were give the task to create it from scratch and do prototyping of it, go through the design process, from understanding your target user (through creating a user persona) to building a basic layout. And define the purpose of the dashboard, identify the ideal user, and to plan the dashboard’s structure and functionality.

Problem Statement

My Solution

The existing MIT SOFA faculty dashboard presents several challenges. It is overly complex, making it difficult for users, whether they are students, staff, or teachers to access and interpret the right information as per their needs. The lack of clarity in navigation and organization of data hinders efficiency and usability, negatively impacting the overall user experience.

The redesigned dashboard by me addresses these issues by prioritizing simplicity and user-centric design. Information is presented in a clear and organized manner, making it easier for users to quickly find and understand the content they need. The streamlined interface improves navigation and introduces faster ways to communicate and access relevant information, ensuring an intuitive and efficient experience for all user groups.

Brand Story

MIT School of Fine Arts & Applied Arts, aims at providing the highest standard of art & design education so that students gain a strong foundation in the artistic tradition via both established & new media, thus enriching their capacity for communication & expression as a whole.

Misson

To create a world-class innovative artist who can lead the creative industry at global standards.Collaborations with the Industry to bridge the Gap between Industry and Academics. To produce creative designers for effective communication to serve society.

Vision

Promotion of creative arts through innovation and research to meet global standards.

Purpose of Dashboard

A college dashboard serves as a centralized hub for data-driven decision making. It consolidates key performance indicators (KPIs) into a visual format, enabling administrators, faculty, and staff to quickly assess the college's overall health and identify areas for improvement.

A dashboard provides a single, accessible location for all essential college data and metrics.

Centralized Information Hub

By visualizing key performance indicators (KPIs), it aids in data-driven decision making for administrators.

Decision Making Support

Identifying trends and patterns helps optimize resource distribution across departments.

Efficient Resource Allocation

Real-time data updates enable effective communication among stakeholders.

Improved Communication

A dashboard can foster transparency by making data accessible to faculty, staff, and students.

Enhanced Transparency

Design Process

For the MIT SOFA faculty dashboard project, I employed the Design Thinking Process to create a user-centered solution. This iterative approach involved five key stages.

Questionnaires

Dashboard Vision

• What is your overall vision for a college dashboard?
• How often do you expect to use the dashboard? (daily, weekly, monthly)

Key Performance Indicators

• What are the most critical KPIs for measuring college performance? (e.g., student enrollment, retention, graduation rates )
• How would you like to visualize these KPIs? (e.g., charts, graphs, tables)

Student-Related Information

Faculty and Staff Information

• What student-related data is essential for you to monitor? (e.g., enrolment trends, academic performance, student satisfaction, placement)
• How would you like to view this information? (e.g., by department, program, year)

Admissions and Recruitment:

• What information do you need about faculty and staff? (e.g., attendance, workload, qualifications, performance)
• How would you like to track faculty and staff development?

•What insights do you need about the admissions process? (e.g., application trends, conversion rates, student demographics)
•How would you like to monitor recruitment activities and their impact?

User Persona

Conclusion

Working on the MIT SOFA Faculty Dashboard redesign was a valuable learning experience. As a minor course assignment, it introduced me to the practical aspects of using Figma for prototyping and design. I gained a deeper understanding of creating user personas, planning dashboard structures, and designing user-centric interfaces.

This project helped me strengthen my grasp of the basic principles of UI/UX design while enhancing my ability to approach complex problems with simple, effective solutions.
